How to layer your skincare in the right order
28 May 2026
The order you apply your products in matters more than most people realise. Layer them well and each step does its job; layer them badly and you can block actives from absorbing — or undo the work of the step before.
The simple rule is thinnest to thickest. Start with the lightest, most watery textures and finish with the richest. That means: cleanse first, then any toner or essence, then your treatment serums, then moisturiser to seal everything in. In the morning, always finish with sunscreen.
Give actives a moment to settle before the next layer — thirty seconds is usually enough. And introduce strong ingredients like retinol or acids one at a time, a few nights a week, so your skin can adjust without irritation.
A consistent, well-ordered routine of a few good products will always beat a cupboard full of half-used ones. Keep it simple, keep it regular, and give it time.
